New moulder up and running!

After 40 years of hard work our old Robinson 6 head moulder has been retired, and has been replaced with a newWadkin XE220 moulder. The installation was completed just before Christmas, and the modern machine was straight to work producing Tongue and Groove, Decking, Shiplap and �D� Rail. It will also be used to produce our capping rails for both closeboard fencing and fence panels, stock walling and kennel rails for the agricultural / dairy markets, as well as for general planing and profiling purposes.

The Wadkin is a 6 head moulder, with capacity to run at up to 60m per minute, and has the benefit of quicker and easier changes between the various profiles. We can machine up to 9� x 5� sections, including dry and wet softwoods.

The replacement is part of a phased upgrade to improve both production and safety levels and brings us right up to date with moulding technology, providing our customers with a first class finish and a quick turnaround.

Walford Timber named main sponsor of the Ross 10k run in aid of Acorns Childrens Hospice

We are delighted to announce that we are the main sponsor for the forthcoming Ross 10k run, organised by Ross-on-Wye4Acorns. Ross-on-Wye4Acorns is a committee formed to raise as much money as possible through the staging of various sporting events for the Acorns Childrens Hospice. Last year Geoff Jones, one of the organisers arranged a charity football match between a local Ross team and a team made up of ex Aston Villa players. However, wanting to organise something on an annual basis, the committee decided to start a premier running event in the town, designed to attract large numbers each year.

The event, to take place on Sunday, June 12th, will start and finish at Ross Rowing Club, and the organisers are hoping for at least 300-400 entries in order to raise the projected £2000 for the hospice. Walford Timber Sponsors Golf Day

On Sunday the 10th April 2011, Walford Timber sponsored and entered a team into the Walford School Charity Golf Day, held at Monmouth Golf Club. Team members were George Smith (M.D.), Carl Stacey (Production Foreman), Tony Fletcher (Senior Account Manager), and the company�s electrician Dean Read. All got off to a solid start on a glorious sunny day in the Monmouthshire countryside, however being timber merchants we were all drawn to the wooded areas of the course and had the opportunity of studying some the trees at very close quarters! All four players were very well matched, and being a team event, we were pushing each other all the way around. After finishing in a respectable mid-table position, we sat down and enjoyed a delicious meal, followed by the prize giving and speeches. The event raised several hundred pounds for Walford Primary School that will be put to very good use.

Walford Timber carpenter proves he's got the minerals

Matt Taylor, Walford Timber�s gate carpenter, has recently taken part in a promotional campaign, along with some of the UK�s top rugby stars, for the drink Powerade. The campaign is designed to show sports men/women how much bodily fluid they lose through sweat, whilst they are taking part in sporting activities.

Matt was able to prove his fitness in an hour long beasting against Alun-Wyn Jones (40 caps, Wales), Simon Shaw (52 caps, England), Kelly Brown (40 caps, Scotland) and Luke Fitzgerald (16 caps, Ireland).

Matt says �It was a really good day and all of the professional rugby players were really good lads. The filming started at 1 o�clock in the afternoon and wen t on until 10 o�clock at night, having to continuously do take after take until we got the shots they wanted.�

Matt put his name forward through a company called Rebel Virals and was shortlisted along with five others. A trip to Bristol soon followed with Matt participating in photo shoots and camera tests. These photos were then sent to Coca-Cola for the marketing team to decide upon a winner. Upon getting the job, Matt was then required to attend Twickenham stadium to see how he would perform against the professionals. As you will see from the ad, I think they got more than they bargained for�

1st Goodrich Brownies get green fingers!

Walford Timber, Ross Garden Store, and Elements Gardens have teamed up to supply Goodrich Brownies with some planters for their Centenary Celebration garden party.

Ross Garden Store initially took the request from the Brownies, and passed the construction job on to Elements Gardens. Elements Gardens approached Walford Timber for the materials, who were more than happy to donate the necessary timber for the planters construction.

We received an excellent thank you card from the Brownies which has pride on place in the office.

Perhaps not a good night to do it, as they were nearly all in their finery, but we did supply gloves!

Walford Timber host the Harewood End Agricultural Society

On Thursday 20th May we hosted the Harewood Agricultural Society, a group made up of land owners, people with an agricultural background, as well as people with an interest in agriculture. Around 20 people from the society attended, and after some welcome refreshments were given an introduction to the company by the

Managing Director George Smith. As well as insight into the company�s history, George also discussed Walford Timber�s present and future plans.

Following this, the group were given a detailed guided tour of our facilities, where we were able to demonstrate how many of our products are processed and produced. Questions were fielded throughout the tour, and everyone had a full insight into what we do.

Following the tour of our site, the society then moved just down to the road to Greenblade, producers of high quality turf, and were given a further tour their site, before all meeting back at our local Gastro Pub, The Mill Race, for a delicious meal.

We had some great feedback from the society members who found the tour fascinating, and had several remarks of how surprised they were by the extent of what we do. It was a pleasure to host the society, and an enjoyable day for all.

Doing our bit with the Can Do Crew!

As the world increasingly turns its focus to helping the environment, it seems evermore important to do your bit in recycling all that you can.

Herefordshire Council have made it easier for domestic properties throughout the county, by supplying wheelie bins to every home; replacing the blue box system that was currently in place. This method has been welcomed by most domestic households.

At Walford Timber we are always looking for �greener� alternatives to our current working practices, but it is often difficult to know which way to turn.

Can Do Crew to the rescue!

A recent phone call from the Can Do Crew revealed their intention to provide Herefordshire�s businesses with the solution to their recycling needs.

The Can Do Crew is part of the EnviroAbility Company, which is a not-for-profit organisation setup in 1999. Their primary aims and objectives are to provide and promote projects, which benefit disadvantaged groups of people, the community and the environment.

EnviroAbility were responsible for collecting and processing all material to be recycled from domestic properties around Herefordshire, although they were made redundant when the council introduced the wheelie bin system.

The Can Do Crew decided to turn their attention to recycling business waste instead, and is now providing many businesses throughout Herefordshire with paper, cardboard, tin and plastic bottle recycling. The cardboard and paper recycling has been taken on by Walford Timber.

ISO 9001 Awarded

On Monday 19th October we were proudly accredited with ISO 9001 status. This is fantastic news for our trade customers who buy materials for Highways Agency projects. It means that we are quality assured to treat wood to Highways Sector Scheme 4, ensuring a 30 year desired service life. Since we are also FSC certified we can now tick practically every box - thus providing those that want it with the most fail-safe timber available.

We would like to say big congratulations to David Barnard, William Teiser and Julian Symonds for completing their NVQ Level 2 in Industrial Pre-Treatment of timber. They have all worked really hard to achieve this and we are incredibly proud of our talented team. Their hard work has helped us achieve ISO9001 status, and demonstrates their level of knowledge and expertise.
